Burj Dubai

Burj Dubai - the world’s tallest building in Dubai.

Burj Dubai is set to be the world’s tallest building. The Arabic meaning for the word Burj is “tower”, this gives Burj Dubai the meaning of “Tower of Dubai”.

Construction has started in April 2005. Its final height hasn’t been disclosed, but it has been confirmed that it will be over 2,300 feet tall.

The original design was the design of Australians “Grollo-Tower” in Melbourne, but the tower was redesigned by Skidmore Owings and Merril. The design now resembles a desert flower with six petals which is indigenous to Dubai.

The exact hight of the tower is still a secret and shall be revealed when the building is completed. In fact the developer say that the final height is not yet decided. Financial investors want to make sure that the Burj Dubai is really the tallest building of the world.

Burj DubaiThe tower is arranged around a central core and rises from a flat desert base. The building gets smaller in an upward spiraling pattern. The floor plan is Y-shaped which allows optimal views of the Persian Gulf.

The Burj Dubai will house the first Armani Hotel in the lower 37 floors. Private apartments are in 64 floors, the remaining floors will be filled with corporate offices. Burj Dubai will also feature swimming pools, fitness rooms, restaurants and observation decks.

The Burj Dubai will be the center of a whole new city district which will include a lake, parks, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, exclusive apartment and office builings and a 2.2 mile boulevard. Once completed the area will cover more than 22-million sqarefeet of development.

At the tower’s current growing rate of 4 days per floor the Burj Dubai is expected to be finished in 2008. The project will cost more than one billion dollars.

By the way the Burj Dubai will not only be the tallest building in the world, but it will also have the world’s fastet elevator at 60 ft/s.
